COTTAGE PARK 2011
Cottage Park is situated 25km southwest of
Cooma. The stud was founded in 1953 by John
Shiels a third generation merino breeder and is
now under the new management of Mark and
Jodie Pendergast. During this time we have
seen many trends come and go and the one
thing that has always remained our primary
objective has been to provide our clients with
the highest standard of service to ensure their
maximum profitability and satisfaction.
For more than fifty years Cottage Park sheep
have been renowned for their large frames and
heavy cutting wool qualities, they have proven
their ability to contend with the elements and
have developed into a leading merino strain.
Through the use of an extensive AI program,
some of the country’s leading sires have been
chosen to introduce new and necessary
genetics to help achieve long term breeding
goals.
Maintain fibre diameter of 18 to 19 micron.
Maintain and increase fleece weight
consisting of well nourished, soft handling
wool.
SALE TEAM
This year we are again offering 70 large framed,
heavy cutting one year old rams for auction at
Cottage Park.
With a consistant season we are pleased with
both the growth and appeal of the 2011 sale
team, which we believe are very true to type and
typify our breeding aims.
For a preview prior to sale day we extend to you
an invitation to join us at our open day on
Sunday, November 6 from 9am to 5pm where
the sale rams will be on display.
In case it happens to rain the open day will be
held indoors, refreshments and snacks will be
provided and sheep can be inspected at your
leisure.
Look forward to seeing you there.
HEALTH
All rams have been examined by a local
veterinarian to ensure the health and soundness of
each animal offered.
A separate vetinary certificate can be supplied for
each ram if required.
All rams are drenched regularly and vaccinated
annually with 6in1. All lambs are vaccinated with
Gudair vaccine at marking,
THE TOP SIRE OF 2011
A team of fifteen wethers from Mark and Jodie
Pendergast’s Cottage Park Merino Stud, Cooma,
has won the third and final shearing of the 2008-
2010 Schute Bell-ANFD Merino Wether Trial,
conducted in conjunction with the Australian
National Field Days at their Borenore site, west of
Orange.
Competing against 31 other teams of 15
randomly selected wethers, the Cottage Park entry
had led the trial through each of the previous
years.
At the 2010 shearing, the Pendergast’s team had a
top fleece price of $73.65 and a team average of
$56.92. The team’s previous winning averages
were $53.27 for 2008 and $66.45 in 2009.
The average carcase value for the Cottage Park
wethers was $127.60 leading to an overall team
average value of $304.24 per head, $31 above
the competition average of $271.08.
Cottage Park was established in 1953 by John
Sheils on Wanganella and Hazeldean blood.
Later introductions came from Roseville Park, Tara
Park and Rock-Bank studs and since 2004 the stud
has been owned by Mark and Jodie Pendergast.
The flock, which is classed by John Williams of
Cooma, has an average micron of 19, the same
as that averaged by the trial wethers.
