Stud History
Avonside Merino Stud was founded in 1990 by upgrading our existing Kelton Plain Blood ewes. Between 1990 and 1995 we purchased four Yarrawonga sires enabling us to consolidate on the large framed heavy cutting ability of our ewes. Since 1997 we have accessed some of the industry's best genetics through Artificial Insemination. Leading sires from both Roseville Park and Wurook have been used with great success.
Breeding Objectives
Avonside aims to produce large framed structurally sound sheep capable of consistently producing heavy fleeces of fine-medium wool. Over the years we have reduced fibre diameter to 19-20 micron whilst still making gains in both wool cuts and bodyweights. Emphasis has been placed on wool quality, which must be stylish, well nourished, long stapled with superior handle and measurements. We believe that this blend of fine-medium wool, combined with high body and fleece weights is consistently the most profitable.
Sales Program
Avonside will hold a Field Day on Saturday 7th November 2009 from 9am to 5pm. The day will include displays of stud sires, wool and shearing results. Grade rams will be available for inspection and purchase on the day. The rams destined for the MMA Multi Vendor Sale on Monday 9th November will also be on display.
